Hammocks Beach & Bear Island

Hammocks Beach and Bear Island

If your tired of daily life and need to get away from everything the best advice to give is Hammocks beach. It is truly a reward to yourself to go on this adventure, you can take the kids, or your husband or best of all take the day to yourself and go alone!
The day will start out when you visit the office and buy you $5 Ferry tickets (or if you decide you absolutely love it you can purchase a season pass) and you will board the Ferry than runs every hour on the hour until 5:00pm. The last Ferry is usually the most crowded because there campers coming on board who intend to stay the night on the Isle, and everybody who is still on the island that wants to come home from their day on the Island is boarding to come back.
When you debark the Ferry there is a short walk down a trail that opens up to the wide beach. You can walk up and down the beach for miles finding hundreds of assorted shells. Once you make it to the very end of the island the water is calm and you can actually walk about knee high in the water everywhere you go (and of course the water is much warmer because of the low depth).
One of the best things about the island is that it is never overcrowded as is all of the other beaches around North Carolina, especially in the Summer time. Most beaches become over crowded with tourists and what not; however, this beach remain untouched and in a sense almost magical.
When the time comes and you are ready to leave from your day on the island you will simply walk back down the nature trail to the pavilion and wait for the next Ferry to come. If you have timed it right the wait shouldn't be long at all if it is on the hour.
Take the relaxing ride back to the inland with your bags of shells, tan, and new found relaxation, knowing you found a place to peace and tranquility that almost seems to belong to you that is Hammock Beach.
